About the event

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) Global Women’s Breakfast (GWB) is an annual worldwide event comprised of local meetings which contribute to a global conversation on gender equity in science. At UCalgary the local GWB meeting is co-organized by UCalgary CIDE (Chemists for Inclusivity, Diversity and Equity) and Professor Belinda Heyne, the Department Head of Chemistry. The primary goal of the GWB series is to build a diverse community of individuals of all gender identities to address the ever-present barriers facing gender equity in science. This will be the sixth iteration of this global event, which will be held at the Last Defence Lounge on main campus on February 27, 2024 from 8:30 to 10:30 A.M. The theme of this year’s breakfast is “Catalyzing Diversity in Science”. This year we will be incorporating a workshop from Gayathri Shukla, founder of Campfire Kinship, into the meeting. The title of the workshop is “Art of Inclusive Leadership”. This workshop focuses on helping attendees to become more self-aware of their biases, and develop fluency in leading across cultures, borders, thinking, and communication styles. This workshop equips participants with skills to build bridges across diversity by elevating storytelling as a strategic tool to create safe spaces for brave conversation. By incorporating this workshop into the GWB, we aim to equip participants with the tools necessary to foster an environment of understanding, collaboration, and respect, thereby furthering the cause of gender equity and diversity in the field of science. The local 2024 IUPAC GWB meeting at UCalgary will demonstrate the ongoing commitment of advancing equity, diversity and inclusivity while empowering individuals to be catalysts for positive change in the scientific community.

Registration is free of cost and breakfast will be served at 8.30 A.M. The workshop will commence at 9.00 A.M sharp. We would like to thank the GSA’s Quality Money (QM) Program and the University of Calgary for funding this event!
